"There is a Reason that Cows Don't Yodel"

"Miau" says 17 year old granddaughter.
"Mooo...ooo" says Grandpa Gary.
"There is a Reason that Cows Don't Yodel" the obvious reply of granddaughter.

We have many such "conversations", but it's too bad that I always wanted to become a yodeling cowboy when I retired. I'm such a failure. Of course, any conversation can become the basis of dueling blog entries. Once one has posited the subject, then parallel joint blog entries on it lead in different directions no matter how absurd the subject.

This suggests that one should look at the world of art and Picasso's Guernica. Notice how our brief conversation shares motifs with Picasso’s most famous work depicting the German bombing of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. The bovine connection, the tragedies of war, the suffering of innocent civilians. All are suggested in the plight of the cat, the cow, and my failure at yodeling.

BRETON CHOCOLATE POUND CAKE

We've been making this cake with a unique flavor and texture for birthdays and special occasions for decades. I'm publishing it here as backup so we don't loose the recipe. You can tell from the picture that it has been a well used recipe. The recipe originally came from one of the Family Circle type grocery store magazines in the early 1970's. It can be made and eaten while nude, but it doesn't really have anything to do with this blog. :-)

The recipe predates the microwave oven, which we use in the first step. Use only butter, of course. We buy the Angostura aromatic bitters just for this recipe. It may be a little hard to find, but it is what gives the cake it's unique flavor. We usually chill over night, that's part of what makes the texture. We didn't save the chocolate glaze recipe as we always used just a common chocolate glaze. I've added the aromatic bitters to brownies for a similar flavor too. Angostura has a number of other interesting recipes on their web site, but I've never found one like this one.

I celebrated my birthday doing the Bare-to-Breakers in San Francisco

The Bay-to-Breakers race is 7.5 miles through downtown San Francisco from the Embarcadero Center to the ocean at Golden Gate Park. The Bare-to-Breakers is the organized nude group of the Bay to Breakers runners participating for the 14th consecutive year. May 21st, 2006, was my 60th birthday and I celebrated it by running the race nude. I was so excited that I started before I had intended to and ran with some of the runners. As I realized that at that pace I'd finish much too soon, I slowed way down to postpone when I'd have to put my clothes back on. I finished 17,712th out of 62,000 finishers. Running through San Francisco naked creates such a high that everyone should try it. I handed my camera to spectators on the side lines for the shots of myself. The pictures are posted in the LARC Photo Album.
